Review

Before taking it into production, Audi used to race its prototype at the 24 Hours of Le Mans from 2000. Surprisingly, it won in its first attempt and would go on to put a good show for a number of years.In 2008, the automaker debuted the production model proving they could also make a stylish mid-engine that looked and performed like a regular supercar.

Exterior

The Bavarian automaker has not altered the exterior profile of the R8; rather, the model has evolved seamlessly to its second generation. Its structure is built using aluminum and carbon fiber which has provided extra rigidity and helped reduce its curb weight. This has led to a 40% increase in torsional stiffness and a 110 pounds reduction in curb weight.

The new model is 1.6 inches wider than the outgoing one and features wider shoulders.The new 2017 Audi R8 also features longer horizontal lines that make it appear longer.

At the front, the R8 features a 3-dimensional, single-frame grille which is wider and flatter. The grille’s trapezoid shape augurs well with the wedge-shaped LED headlights that flank it on each side. The taillights also feature LED lighting and are also wedge-shaped. Its spoiler features the body color and is so designed to rise at high speeds. The V10 Plus features carbon fiber front and rear diffusers and black exhaust tips.The models will ride on 20-inch wheels.

Interior

the interior is awesomely stylish and comfortable. The base V10 features adjustable sports seats which are easily configurable to cruising or spirited driving. On the other hand, the V10 Plus features bucket race seats for those looking for a racing experience. In both, Nappa-leather is the standard upholstery on the seats and the rest of the cabin.

the R8 comes with the Audi Virtual Cockpit which incorporates navigation functions, car information and entertainment functions all in one location. The center console features MMI and volume controls to enable easier and quicker access.

The cockpit which is featured on a 12.3 –inch display delivers high resolution graphics courtesy of the Nvidia Tegra chip which powers it.

Engine Specs

Audi will offer the new R8 in a single drive-train tweaked to produce two levels of output. The automaker has done away with the 4.2 L, V-8 engine on the outgoing model.

The new models will only feature a 5.2 L, V-10 engine. On the base V10 models, the engine will produce 540 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque while on the V10 Plus models, it will produce 610 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque.This increase in fuel economy is attributed to the addition of a cylinder deactivation feature that does away with engine braking at low speeds.

The engine is paired with an S Tronic transmission system. The V10 bolts from 0-60 mph in 3.5 seconds while the V10 Plus makes the same run in just 3.1 seconds

Release Date and Price

The 2017 Audi R8 is scheduled to hit the market in March next year. Pricing details are yet to be released by the German automaker. However, according to rumors, the base MSRP V10 will likely start at around $ 165,000 while the V10 Plus could start at around $ 185,000.There are reports that a less-expensive variant will be added later on.
